poor horse will release its second album of 2021, “HOSPITAL,” on all streaming services Oct. 21.
artist’s note: this is an extremely personal record for me, given that it uses audio recordings I made while visiting my son in the NICU. my goal was to capture the stress, joy, claustrophobia and wonder of spending seven-plus hours per day in a hospital for almost a month-and-a-half. my wife and I had to take turns seeing our son because of COVID protocols, so I spent my free time in the waiting room working on the album. the act of creation helped me to process everything we were going through.
“HOSPITAL” is also my first foray into electronic music. the decision to venture into more ambient territory was inspired by a number of artists who’ve influenced me through the years, most notably Claire Rousay, Brian Eno, Portishead, Boards of Canada and Harold Budd. it was also a decision born out of circumstance: I couldn’t bring my guitar into the hospital, so digitized music was my only option.
poor horse also has several other projects in the works, all of which will be announced later this year or early in 2022.
